6 Tips for Your Kayaking Tour

posted in: Blog | 0

Kayaking can be the adventure of a lifetime and is one of the greatest things to do in St. Petersburg. Yet it might not be as fun if you aren’t prepared. You want to have the proper gear, depending on the type of trip (i.e., flatwater or whitewater kayaking). For general kayaking tours, here are six tips to ensure you get the most of your time:

1. Dress Appropriately

When choosing what to wear, consider the weather and water temperature. You don’t want to be underdressed should you fall into the water. In warm weather, take swimwear, a moisture-wicking t-shirt or long-sleeve shirt, and water shoes or strapped sandals. If inclement weather is expected, take along a vest, fleece jacket, or rain jacket.

In temperatures below 60°F, you’ll need long underwear, synthetic or wool socks, kayaking gloves, and a wool or synthetic cap. If very cold water is anticipated, take along a dry suit/top or wetsuit. Dressing in layers is a good idea. Then you can be prepared for any type of weather.

2. Confirm the Starting Location and Time

Know where your Russian kayaking tour begins. The starting point for any trip is determined in advance, so the group knows where to meet. If you don’t get there in time, you might miss your tour altogether. Your email confirmation should say when and where to meet the day your trip begins.

3. Bring Your Own Water and Supplies

There will be plenty of water around you, but it won’t keep you hydrated. Start drinking water before you arrive for the trip and do so regularly during your travels. The recommended amount is at least two quarts per person, per day.1 Other essential supplies include sunglasses, insect repellant, a protective case for your cellphone, and a first-aid kit.

4. Protect Yourself from the Sun

Sun protection is a must. Without it, you may end up with a sunburn or worse. Use a water-resistant sunscreen with an SPF of at least 30 and a lip balm of SPF 15 or more. Even if you feel you’re in the shade, sunlight and UV rays reflect off of the water. Apply sunscreen everywhere your skin is exposed. Hats and water shoes do a great job of protecting your skin as well.

5. Choose the Right Kayak

Are you kayaking alone or with others? The more people, the larger the vessel you’ll need. Kayaks range from 14 to 17 feet long and can accommodate up to three people. Determine how many people you’ll be kayaking with ahead of time, so the right-sized boat is available.

6. Learn All Safety Rules

Bring lifejackets, inflatable paddle floats, and pumps in case you capsize, although this isn’t common on a kayaking river tour. If you attend a safety class or orientation, even better. You can then be more prepared and confident about your trip.
