On Friday June 12th Russia celebrates one of the main State holidays, “Russia Day.” This day marked the beginning the Russian Federation after the Soviet Union.

On the 12th of June 1990, the First Congress of People’s Deputies of the Russian Federation adopted the Declaration of State Sovereignty of the Russian Soviet Federative Socialist Republic. The document announced the supremacy of the Constitution and its laws, the equality of all the citizens, political parties and social organizations.

During the celebrations people usually attend concerts and fireworks, which are organized in many cities all over the country. Outstanding Russian scientists, writers, and humanitarian workers receive State Awards from the President of Russia on this day. Most schools and public offices are closed on this day.
